For the week of April 22, 2018

FROM PASTOR DEB: I will be ending my contract with St. Mark at the end of May.  It is entirely a personal decision, having served as interim for 16 months by that time.  I will miss you all and will keep praying for a new pastor for you!  –Pastor Deb

CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE: In light of Pastor Deb’s announcement to leave St. Mark, and since it’s been nearly two years since Pastor Ben left, we’d like to provide you a more detailed update as to our progress.
The Call Committee began working in the early fall of 2016 on the appropriate paperwork by surveying and meeting with members of the congregation. From those meetings, we developed St. Mark’s Ministry Site Profile (MSP) which outlines information about our congregation and the skills, background and priorities we desire in a new pastor. We reviewed the first batch of candidates to in late November of 2016.
Since that time, we have reviewed MSP periodically to ensure it is current and we have evaluated nearly 20 pastor candidate profiles, having completed between 12 to 15 Skype interviews. We invited two candidates to Storm Lake for face-to-face interviews, one who returned with his wife for a second interview. Obviously neither candidate worked out for us. In early January of 2018, we were in the middle of negotiating an interview in Storm Lake, but he withdrew for personal reasons by the end of that month. Since then, we have reviewed and interviewed two candidates by Skype; we will not be moving either forward in the process.
In April, the Call Committee updated PPC on our progress and asked for input. At that meeting, it was expressed that the Call Committee should not settle, but rather, continue to work with the Synod Office to review viable candidates. To be clear, we have had a number of viable, strong candidates since beginning this process, however, we have been unable to secure them.
The Call Committee will give an update at the May 6th Congregational Meeting. We welcome your questions and comments and ask for your continued prayers for our work and discernment.

Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction
April 29, 2018

Now that we have gone beyond Easter, I am wondering whether prayer for one another or trying out spiritual practices had any impact on your prayer life.  Please talk with me about it if you have anything you want to say about your experience.  –Pastor Deb

LENTEN SOUP SUPPER OFFERING was split between Upper Des Moines and The Bridge. The total was $742 so $371 was sent to each.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, ALTA, IA  is working with an impoverished neighborhood of Alta, the Westview Trailer Park.  The park was established in 1963 and most of the 39 trailers date from that time.  As a result, many of the electrical and plumbing systems do not meet current code specifications.  There are other safety issues with broken windows and leaking roofs.  (There are 153 residents, 78 of whom are children.) We are planning two work days, April 28 and May 12, to address these concerns.  Every helping hand is welcome (especially licensed plumbers and electricians).  Any questions, contact Pastor Denise Parrello @ 218-791-6136.
